Skin and Bones Theater is an adventurous new 70 seat cinema and performance space located in the heart of downtown Durham, NC. Starting from eclectic tastes and with an eye for the unusual, Skin and Bones provides a welcoming and intimate space for local and visiting artists to connect with audiences.
The theater’s founders, Jim Haverkamp and Alex Maness, opened the underground arts space Shadowbox Studio in 2014. Leveraging their deep connections with Durham’s arts communities, and with a fondness for the local, Skin and Bones Theater aims to be a showcase for a wide-ranging mix of performers, styles, and experiences.

In any given month, audiences can expect to encounter cutting edge independent films and overlooked classics, a range of live bands with an emphasis on experimentation and craft, and community-generated programming from lectures to book clubs to meetups.
We see ourselves as a place to connect people, and actively pursue collaborations with programmers, theater troupes, dance companies, artists, universities, and businesses to develop compelling programming that will reach many communities across the region. Some of our collaborators include Film Durham, Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies, Hayti Heritage Center, Night School Bar, Speller Street Films, Second Daughter Cinema, Two Beer Cinema Club, A/V Geeks, and more.
